We played Ballymore in the Div 2 league on Saturday evening, and it was a very entertaining game. Unfortunately for us Ballymore won 1-14 to our 1-10 Team: O Kelly - J Moran - D Mchugh - J Ruske - N Nerney - J Balfe - S Farrell - K Murray - D Trappe - G Victor - P Dennigan - R Murray - G Gilchrist - E Clarke - J Hand We play again Friday 27th at home in Dunbeggan Park. Of course it helped that due to the official “Buy a Brick” launch there were cakes, sandwiches and sweets. U8 We had our first blitz of the season in Ardagh, and everyone from all the teams got to play and have fun. Grattan Ladies Our Senior Ladies were narrowly beaten by Dromard in the Division 2 Semi-Final on a score line of 4.8 to 5.8. Registration now due with completed forms and fee to be returned please as soon as possible. Official Launch News As you may have seen in the edition already we had our official launch for our Buy a Brick initiative. We believe it’s going to really benefit the area with a new venue for the community, and with all the Gaels running around on Monday, the ladies matches, our seniors playing, training and we always seem to have a full car park....it is all about community. U14’s Western Gaels U13s made the trip all the way to Castledermot Gaa Kildare to play their long awaited Div 4 plate final in the Leinster Cross County league on Saturday last 14th April. We played in ideal conditions, at a well-maintained venue, a very entertaining game right from the off. Luke Dowd in goal once again had a brilliant game with two crucial saves midway through the second half. Our full back of Dan Devlin & Cormarc o Dowd had great games with their excellent workrate not only on Saturday but all through this campaign. The half back line of Sam Murphy , Rasheed Yeobah & Kieren O’Dowd had super games with their tremendous workrate and eagerness to show for the ball. Our superb midfield pairing of Beau o Connor & Harry Mulvihill were a torn in the side of Castledermot right from the off with their brilliant running abs work ethic. the half forward line of Jimmy Farrell, Stephen Oates & Niall Hawes were outstanding on the day contributing 4-3 between them. Niall had one of the picks of the goals on day especially with what he had to do to score it and by what a goal. Our full forward line of Gavin Nulty & Michaél Smith had super game also who both were very unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. We went in at the break Western Gaels 3-5 Castledermot 1-0 but on resumption of the second half we felt we were in a great position and after making a couple of positional switches with Kielan Ruske & Conor Farrell. Now on our second half performance as a squad of players was outstanding. Our workrate was immense with a never give up attitude and that was the key to a great victory, Jack Tiernan, Tadhg Tiernan, Peter Farrell & John McHugh who were all introduced at different stages during the game put in huge efforts that got us over the line. Final score Western Gaels 5-11 Castledermot 2-3, Scorers on day Harry Mulvihill 1-9 , Stephen Oates 3-2 , Niall Hawes 1-0 , A huge thanks to Castledermot Gaa for their hospitality before and after the game A very special mention has to go to the players , parents and supporters who made the long journey to Kildare on Saturday, it showed true dedication and we as a management team thank you for that it made all the journey more worthwhile when our two great joint captains Jimmy Farrell ( Shannon Gaels ) & Rasheed Yeobah ( Grattan Gaels ) received the trophy from Tadhg Fennin from Leinster Gaa. Well done to all involved on a super journey in this Leinster competition. Best of luck to all our squad with their respective clubs in their competitions to come. Unfortunately, our match against MTA was called off as their pitch was unplayable so our next match will be on Sunday 8th at home, in Div 2 League v St Helens at 11.30am. Well done to our all team members playing on U14 County team winning against Dublin and on U16 County beating Carlow. Training for all ages now in full swing as U16 and U12 competitions start this week. Registrations now being taken as well as final orders for Club Gear which must be ordered and paid for this week. Western Gaels U13s played their rescheduled semi-final game in the Leinster Cross county league on Tuesday last 27th away to Tubberclair (Westmeath). We Played under lights at a fine venue in a game played with great spirit and determination by both teams. Our goalkeeper Luke Dowd was in fine form with some good saves and his fine kick outs. Our full back line of Cormac O’Dowd & Dan Devlin had super games with their tight marking and great work rate while our half back line of Sam Murphy, Rasheed Yeobah & Kieren O’ Dowd all had super games with their excellent work rate. Our midfield duo of Harry Mulvihill & Beau O’Connor had super games, Harry scoring 1-3 to his credit with Beau unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. The half forward line of Jimmy Farrell, Stephen Oates & Willie Stokes were in outstanding form right from the off with Jimmy & Stephen scoring 3-6 between them. Our full forward line of Niall Hawes and Gavin Nulty were in super form also Gavin scoring two super goals in the first half after some great work by Niall, we went in at half time Western Gaels 5-4 Tubberclair 1-6. Having started the second half with a good lead we continued to keep it as the game went on, a couple of early points set us on our way to a super win. Conor Farrell, Jack Tiernan, Peter Farrell, Michael Smith, John McHugh, Tadhg Tiernan were all introduced at different stages during the game and each played their part in a fantastic team performance. We will eagerly await our final with great excitement within the coming weeks, it’s provisionally down for Saturday 14th April with venue & time to be confirmed. All children will get to play and it’s a lot of fun…promise Easter Bunny news There was a break in the weather, the sun shon and the Easter bunny was spotted down at Grattans on Saturday and it left loads of eggs for our children to find. Every child managed to find an egg and there was a quiz for all the age groups and even a few prizes for parents, (although some of the questions where very difficult). A big thank you to everyone who came to support the club and all the children for having such great fun. A special mention to several older children who helped the younger ones found eggs in our great little community.
